About Dr. Nelson
Dr. James F. Nelson grew up in Denver, Colorado. He graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 1973 and earned his DDS degree from Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia in 1977. The following year, he completed his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery internship at the same institution. He received his certification in 1981 from Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia. In July of 1981 Dr. Nelson joined the Practice.

The depth of Dr. Nelson's implant knowledge serves his patients well. He has been involved since the beginning of modern implant dentistry in North America. His vast experience provides him with a clear perspective on how the field has advanced over the years and how the technology can benefit his patients. Dr. Nelson has been a member of the Academy of Osseointegration since its inception. The organization, which now includes implant professionals representing 70 countries, has a stated mission to "enhance oral health globally by advancing the science, practice, and ethis of implant dentistry." Dr. Nelson also attends the annual implant meeting presented by the national Oral Surgery organization, AAOMS, where the latest developments in the field are discussed with professionals from around the world.
At Commonwealth Oral & Facial Surgery, the doctors have all had excellent training in basic and advanced surgical techniques. This background gives them the skills to be excellent implant surgeons. Leadership in the Dental Profession
Dr. Nelson is an honorary member of numerous professional organizations. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Richmond Dental Society, has been an Alternate Delegate of the Virginia Dental Association, past Delegate of Virginia of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the President of the Richmond Dental Study Club, and the President of the Virginia Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons.
He was a member of the Pierre Fauchard Society. In 2000 and was honored as Richmond’s top Oral Surgeon by “Richmond Magazine.”
Community & Family
Dr. Nelson is a member of the Reveille United Methodist Church. Dr. Nelson donates his professional services through the VDA Donated Dental service organization.
He enjoys spending time with his wife Kaki and their three grown children. He thoroughly enjoys the game of golf and recently scored a hole in one. His special interests are snow skiing, fly fishing and cooking.
