About Dr. Malmquist:
Dr. Malmquist is a Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon with advanced training and experience with dental implants, bone regeneration, and bone grafting. He has been providing quality oral surgery procedures for patients in the Portland area since 1977. Following training in Sweden with the father of implant dentistry, Dr. Per-Ingvar Branemark, Dr. Malmquist was one of the first surgeons in the country to begin placing dental implants in 1983. Since then he has placed tens of thousands of dental implants and is considered an international expert in the field.
Prior to opening his practice in Portland, Dr. Malmquist pursued his formal education at the University of Oregon School of Dentistry. Upon completion of his DMD and internship in the U.S. Military, he spent four years in a hospital-based residency program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Oregon Health Science University, where he later became a professor, sharing his knowledge with students and residents in the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

The practice is unique in that it is not only one of the largest surgical implant practices in the region, but it also offers the full scope of oral surgery procedures. It is very rare to find an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon with nationally renowned expertise in dental implant surgery, bone generation, bone grafting, as well as, extensive experience in wisdom teeth removal, corrective jaw surgery and TMJ total joint reconstruction.
This is also one of the only practices in the region with a dedicated Implant Coordinator, who is highly trained and has years of experience with dental implant procedures. She serves as the liaison between Dr. Malmquist’s practice and the patients’ general dentists to ensure a seamless treatment sequence and the most comfortable experience possible for patients.
Expertise in Dental Implants:
Dr. Malmquist is renowned throughout the professions as an expert in the field of implant dentistry. He has given more than 500 lectures on all aspects of dental implant reconstruction and bone grafting, presenting his research and cases to colleagues throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia.
In addition, he has authored chapters in textbooks on dental implants, bone grafting, and bone regeneration. Dr. Malmquist has also written numerous articles for scientific journals on various aspects of dental implant treatment and has been involved in research on bone physiology and regeneration.
Leadership in the Profession:
As a Fellow of the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists, Dr. Malmquist is honored and recognized by his colleagues in dentistry. He has served in numerous leadership positions in professional organizations, including President of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and Secretary of the Academy of Osseointegration. He also served as an examiner for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for seven years. Dr. Malmquist has been honored with visiting professorships at the University of California, University of Tennessee, University of Alabama, University of Indiana, and the University of Minnesota.
