The Institute for Dental Implant Awareness, its Advisory Board and team, mourn the passing of Dr. P. I. Branemark, the Swedish orthopedic surgeon who discovered that bone fuses to titanium, creating a strong bond. This led to the development of modern, root-form dental implants, which are used throughout the world to replace missing teeth.
In addition to dental implants, Dr. Branemark also developed procedures for replacing various body parts, such as eyes, ears and noses, utilizing similar technology to attach the prostheses. Maxillofacial Prosthetics is a specialty within the specialty of Prosthodontics that provides patients who have lost these body parts due to cancer or trauma with the ability to lead normal lives again.
What made Dr. Branemark so extraordinary, was his focus on helping patients throughout his distinguished career. He reminded dentists and specialists worldwide they should never forget that everything clinicians do in this field is about improving the quality of patients’ lives. The millions of patients that have benefitted from dental implant treatment are his legacy.
